Abstract

The Ring and Ride Transport Project in Greater Manchester to support transportation of elderly and disabled people is part of the effort to promote transport equity in Britain. The Government’s Equality Strategy sets out a vision for a strong, modern and fair Britain. It is built on two principles of equality-equal treatment and equal opportunity. The objective of the research was to investigate the merits of the Transport for Greater Manchester project and examine the impact of on the mobility and quality of life of their users. Data was collected from 50 disabled middle aged people, 50 elderly people who use the “Ring and Ride” facility and then 3 other staff of the “Ring and Ride” project. The responses suggest that the project significantly supports the vulnerable in the society to shop, visit friends and family, visit recreational centers, visit hospital appointments, get to and from work, and travel from council day centres and many others in a more convenient way.
