In a major cultural and technological innovation, Ayers Rock Resort has launched “Sunrise Journeys,” a groundbreaking immersive experience that merges modern technology with Indigenous art and storytelling. Premiering on August 1, 2024, this early morning spectacle transforms the iconic Uluṟu desert landscape into a massive canvas, offering a unique celebration of the connection to Country through a blend of laser, light, and sound.
A Celebration of Culture and Innovation
Sunrise Journeys, situated in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, is designed to honour the cultural heritage of the Aṉangu people, the Traditional Owners of Uluṟu. The experience spans a vast area of 200 metres by 300 metres—approximately the size of three football fields—where modern Indigenous artwork is brought to life using cutting-edge animation technology.
At the core of this visual and auditory journey is “Ngura Nganampa Wiru Mulapa,” a bespoke painting by three acclaimed Aṉangu artists: Selina Kulitja from Maruku Arts, Denise Brady from Kaltukatjara Art, and Valerie Brumby from Walkatjara Art. The painting, which translates to “our Country is truly beautiful” in Pitjantjatjara, serves as the focal point of the show. It is interpreted through advanced laser, light, and video projections, complemented by narrations from the artists themselves, which offer deeper insights into the natural rhythms of the land.
Denise Brady, one of the artists involved, expressed her enthusiasm about the project: “Our hearts burn with passion to share our Country and knowledge with the world. We have created Sunrise Journeys to invite people into our culture and share our way of life.”
Technological Marvels in the Outback
The technical execution of Sunrise Journeys has been spearheaded by Mandylights, a renowned Australian visual experience team known for its work on high-profile projects such as Sydney’s Vivid 2024 and the Backstreet Boys’ Las Vegas residency. For this project, Mandylights has used a range of advanced equipment including six 30-watt lasers, seven 12kW projectors, and 30 bright field lights. A sophisticated audio-surround system with spatialised audio tracks enhances the immersive experience, making audiences feel as if they are part of the visual narrative.
The creative process involved meticulously tracing a high-resolution photograph of the painting and dividing it into over 170 digital segments. These segments were then animated with video and laser software to synchronise with the accompanying music and narration, creating a dynamic and engaging experience.
Richard Neville, CEO of Mandylights, highlighted the significance of the project: “When the audience witnesses finches emerging from the bush or a flock of cockatoos rising in laser lights, they are seeing elements from the original artwork brought to life with the latest animation technology.”
Commitment to Cultural Respect and Tourism
Sunrise Journeys continues Ayers Rock Resort’s dedication to respectful and meaningful cultural tourism. The resort’s commitment to Indigenous collaboration was previously demonstrated with the launch of Wintjiri Wiru, an award-winning show featuring drone technology to tell Aṉangu stories. Sunrise Journeys builds on this legacy by providing an authentic and immersive cultural experience.
Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia, which operates Ayers Rock Resort, stated: “Sunrise Journeys elevates our commitment to authentic, meaningful, and responsible cultural tourism. It’s an honour to work with leading artists and showcase their unique connection to the natural environment.”
