A revolutionary new platform is set to transform South Africa’s event industry by tackling common issues of security, ticketing, and efficiency. Launched by tech innovator Shakes Mkhonza, Amusema is an advanced event management platform designed to simplify the planning and management of events, while also safeguarding attendees with enhanced security features.
Amusema, a subsidiary of Umdoko Internet, operates as a cloud-based platform on Amazon Web Services, offering event organisers an array of tools that streamline ticketing and improve event security. Features include colour-coded tickets, personalised microsites for each event, and wristband scanning technology, all of which are accessible directly from smartphones. According to Mkhonza, Amusema’s technology brings a much-needed solution to an industry grappling with inefficient ticketing processes and the growing threat of fraud.
“Amusema isn’t just about organising events; it’s about making the entire process seamless and secure,” Mkhonza explained. “Our platform addresses key challenges in South Africa’s event sector, from inefficient ticketing systems to security concerns that have become more prominent as the industry grows.”
South Africa’s events sector is experiencing robust growth, projected to surpass a compound annual growth rate of 5.1% by 2029. With festivals, concerts, and gatherings increasing in popularity across the country, the need for reliable, secure event management solutions has never been more pressing. As organisers strive to maintain smooth operations and keep events safe, Amusema’s services offer a timely solution.
Amusema integrates advanced encryption, biometric verification, and a zero-trust security model to create a secure and enjoyable environment for eventgoers. Mkhonza believes that security should be a primary consideration, not just an afterthought. “True security in events isn’t just a precaution—it’s a commitment to excellence,” he said. “With Amusema, we ensure that this commitment is upheld.”
Mkhonza’s journey into tech and events was inspired by his upbringing in Mofolo, Soweto. His interest in technology was sparked by his father’s job at Olivetti, where typewriters and early office machines captured his imagination. “My early exposure to technology through my father’s work and my experiences in events have shaped my passion for creating solutions that make a difference,” Mkhonza noted.
After earning a National Diploma in Information Technology from the University of Johannesburg in 1999, Mkhonza began his career at IBM, where his interest in technology was further cemented. His passion for events also led him to establish Amuse Africa in the early 2000s, a venture focused on South Africa’s hip-hop scene. This experience revealed critical gaps in the event management space, especially around ticketing, which inspired the creation of Amusema.
As Amusema prepares to expand its reach across South Africa, Mkhonza remains focused on supporting local event organisers by providing innovative tools that simplify their work while enhancing the guest experience. “Our mission with Amusema is straightforward: we want to empower organisers by giving them the tools they need to simplify operations and enhance the overall experience,” Mkhonza said. “We’re here to ensure security concerns don’t prevent the creation of memorable events.”
With its comprehensive, user-friendly platform, Amusema is poised to make a lasting impact on the events sector in South Africa, offering a future where events are more efficient, secure, and enjoyable for all involved.
