Kyocera Corporation, based in Kyoto, Japan, has announced the formation of the “O-RU Alliance” in partnership with six telecommunications companies from around the world. The alliance, set to be officially launched on March 3, 2025, aims to foster the development and adoption of interoperable, flexible radio networks based on Open RAN (Radio Access Networks) technologies.
The key members of the newly formed O-RU Alliance include Alpha Networks (Taiwan), HFR (Korea), Microelectronics Technology (Taiwan), SOLiD (Korea), VVDN Technologies (India), and WNC (Taiwan). These companies, along with Kyocera, will collaborate on enhancing the interoperability of Central Units (CUs), Distributed Units (DUs), and Radio Units (RUs) – the foundational components of 5G wireless networks.
The O-RU Alliance is part of a broader push towards the Open RAN ecosystem, which seeks to overcome the limitations of traditional 5G networks that are typically built using proprietary equipment from a single supplier. Currently, network operators face challenges when trying to integrate equipment from different manufacturers, due to non-standardised interfaces between CUs, DUs, and RUs. This restriction has stifled the potential for more flexible and cost-effective network deployments.
By promoting Open RAN, the O-RU Alliance aims to provide telecom operators with more flexibility in selecting equipment from various suppliers, enhancing the overall performance and scalability of 5G networks. This open architecture allows for the interconnection of devices from different manufacturers, fostering greater competition and reducing reliance on a single vendor.
Kyocera, in its role as the driving force behind the alliance, will be offering its O-RAN-compliant CUs and DUs to members for joint interoperability testing. This collaborative effort will help streamline the process of integrating equipment from multiple suppliers, ultimately advancing the development of Open RAN technologies. Kyocera will also provide a reference design for the O-RAN interface processing unit of O-RUs, enabling members to improve the interconnectivity between the various components in their systems.
The O-RU Alliance’s focus on interoperability and open standards is expected to significantly impact the global 5G infrastructure market, opening up new business opportunities for telecom operators and suppliers alike.
