The Taicang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (THIDZ) in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, has been awarded the prestigious title of “Best ESG Community in Sino-European Economic and Trade Cooperation.” The accolade was presented at the inaugural Sino-European Corporate ESG Best Practices Conference, which took place in Frankfurt, Germany.
Since its establishment in 1993, THIDZ has become a model of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, playing a key role in fostering partnerships between German and Chinese enterprises. This recognition highlights nearly three decades of Sino-German cooperation within the zone, with a particular focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.
The development zone has carved out a niche in three major industries: key components for new energy vehicles, machine tools, and aerospace. By encouraging collaboration between German and local firms, THIDZ has driven industrial integration, promoted innovation, and helped develop a skilled workforce through educational initiatives. To date, over 500 German companies have invested more than USD 6 billion in the zone, generating an annual industrial output exceeding RMB 60 billion.
THIDZ has also prioritised environmental sustainability. In 2021, it launched the Sino-German Energy Efficiency Network, a project designed to enhance energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions. The initiative has already made significant strides, and the zone plans to implement a carbon emissions monitoring system in the coming years. This system aims to support companies in adopting data-driven energy solutions, further boosting energy conservation and emission reduction efforts.
In addition to its environmental achievements, THIDZ has made remarkable progress in vocational education. In 2001, it introduced China’s first Sino-German dual vocational education and training project, adapting Germany’s renowned apprenticeship model for local use. After more than 20 years, this initiative has become a cornerstone of the zone’s industrial development and talent cultivation strategy, ensuring a steady pipeline of highly trained professionals.
THIDZ continues to enhance its business environment by offering a range of supportive policies for enterprises. This approach has improved corporate governance and contributed to the zone’s reputation as an attractive hub for foreign investment.
The jury at the Frankfurt conference commended THIDZ’s all-encompassing collaboration model, which it described as a showcase of success in industrial cooperation, talent development, and green growth. The jury also highlighted the sustainability and feasibility of the zone’s initiatives, noting their positive long-term impact.
“Taicang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone offers a unique example of Sino-German cooperation,” the jury commented. “Its comprehensive, multi-level collaboration model is distinctive, while its sustainability is evident in both its current achievements and future planning.”
The award underscores THIDZ’s status as a leading example of international industrial collaboration, cultural integration, and eco-friendly growth. As the zone continues to build on its achievements, it is likely to remain at the forefront of Sino-European economic and trade cooperation.
